Re: Concerns About the Quality of Food Served in TDCJ Facilities

Dear Director Lumpkin,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to express my deep concerns regarding the food that is being served to inmates within the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) facilities. While I understand that the current circumstances have led to certain challenges, it has come to my attention that the quality of food being provided has worsened, even beyond the lockdown situation.

First and foremost, I acknowledge that individuals incarcerated within TDCJ facilities have broken the law, some of whom may have been wrongfully convicted. Nevertheless, it is important to recognize their basic human rights, one of which is access to nutritious and adequate meals. As family members and loved ones, we feel compelled to advocate for their well-being, especially when the quality of their food is noticeably substandard.

Recently, I came across an enlightening article published on The Marshall Project's website titled "Pig Slop No More: Texas Prisons Detail Plan to Improve Food" (link: https://www.themarshallproject.org/2023/01/20/pig-slop-no-more-texas-prisons-detail-plan-to-improve-food?fbclid=IwAR1lxf2N5WBjrjASvtPSuiE6t7Svj2m4sVXcJ0nx9F4nXtQCQtX4Wkb1_Xc). The article shed light on the efforts being made by TDCJ to address the inadequate quality of food served in the past. However, it is disheartening to note that despite these plans, the situation has not improved and has possibly even deteriorated.

In particular, I was deeply disturbed by the details shared in the article, such as the presence of foreign objects in the food, unappetizing and unhygienic preparation methods, and insufficient portion sizes. These conditions are not only dehumanizing but can also have serious implications on the physical and mental well-being of the inmates. A nutritious and balanced diet is essential for their overall health and rehabilitation.

As concerned citizens, we firmly believe that it is our duty to advocate for those who have been incarcerated, especially when it comes to basic rights such as access to adequate food. While we recognize that running prisons maybe a complex task, we urge the TDCJ to prioritize the well-being and dignity of the individuals under its care.

Therefore, we respectfully request that immediate action be taken to address the ongoing issues surrounding the food served in TDCJ facilities. We implore you to thoroughly investigate the current state of affairs and take necessary steps to rectify the situation. It is crucial to ensure that the inmates are provided with meals that meet the minimum standards of nutrition, hygiene, and palatability.

In closing, I kindly urge you to give careful consideration to the concerns raised in this letter. We understand that managing a correctional system is a challenging responsibility, but ensuring the provision of adequate food is a fundamental obligation that should not be overlooked. It is our hope that you will take appropriate measures to improve the conditions and restore the dignity of the incarcerated individuals within TDCJ facilities.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. We eagerly await your response and action on this pressing issue. Together, we can strive towards creating a more just and humane correctional system in the great state of Texas.

Sincerely,

Angela Thomas(Smith)
